Becky’s answers a call. “Violet we have a new development.
The information we got from the man who left Burner in Cyprus led us to the
U.S. Black Star was sent to the location and we lost him Violet.” The voice
pauses and breathes in. “Black Star is dead.”
“How did he die?” Becky asks.
“He was shot judging by what we heard from his phone.”
“What do you mean by his phone?” Becky asks as she pushes her
food away from her and walks towards the window looking out of the house she
was in.
“He placed a call to us and kept the line open throughout the
conversation between him and the man who shot him. The call lasted for about
ten minutes. We sent an agent in to help him but the agent got there late. He
found him dead. The conversation we heard changes everything. I am sending the
recording to you now. Listen to it and get back to me. ”
“I will.” Becky says and heads downstairs where she sees Jake
looking down at a map.
“The recording you are about to hear has been edited. Violet,
Black Star could have escaped if he chose to but he put himself in danger to
get this information. He was a very fine agent; we cannot allow his demise to
be in vain.”
Becky nods her head and says “I understand.” She ends the
call and plays the recording loud for Jake to hear.
There is a little static and then a sound comes on. It is
Black Star’s voice “Where are you taking me?”
Another voice responds “Who sent you?”
“Your friend was caught. The people that have him sent me.”
Black Star says
“I knew it. He was meant to contact me yesterday. I went
along with the plan for today and waited for him. Your people know how to
frustrate someone.”
“He is not coming back with the information you need. So what
are you going to do now?”
“Nothing changes. Everything goes on as planned. Plan B is
already in effect as we speak.”
“What is plan B?” Black Star asks.
“Steve, I always believed that you were clean and here we
are.” The man says clearly changing the topic.
“Chief, I thought the same thing about you.”
“It is sad that you are in the position that you are in. I
wished it did not have to end like this.” Chief says.
“Tell me who you work for?” Steve asks
There is silence. Steve’s voice sounds again. “You are going
to kill me. Please for once in your life, tell me the truth. Who do you work
for?”
There is silence again. “I guess I owe you that.” There is
silence again, like the man is trying to consider whether to say it or not and
then he does. “Les Papers.”
There is silence again. “Get out.” There is a sound of the
door opening. “Kneel down.”
Steve’s voice sounds. “Who is the head of Les Papers?” there is silence and then
Steve’s voice sounds for the last time. “Who do you report to?”
“Marcus Cross.” The sound of a gunshot is heard. The
recording ends.
Becky drops the phone, takes a sit and rakes her hand through
her thick black hair. Jake does not say a word; he just continues to look at
the maps. Becky picks up the phone and punches in a number. She puts it on
speaker and says “We just heard it.”
“We checked the name and got a hit. We are sending the
picture of him to you. There isn’t much information about him. We are still working
to find out more. We’ll get back to you once we do.”
“Okay.” Becky replies.
“We have identified the man who was talking to Black Star as
Chief Culling. He works with the law enforcement agency. We have an address on
him and we are sending a team there.”
Jake speaks up. “Tell them to stand down. We are on our way.”
“I will do that. The U.S team will be happy to have you.”
Becky hangs up and looks at Jake as he begins to pack up. She
shows him the picture of Marcus Cross that was sent to her phone. Jake looks at
the picture then says “Let’s go.”
Becky goes upstairs to pack a small bag. She hurries
downstairs and locks the door behind her. She gets into the car and puts her
seatbelt on as Jake drives out. She brings out her phone and punches in a
number “Kevin, how is she doing?”
“She is with the medical unit, they are checking to see if
she is okay. The UK team is going through her things, trying to find out why
she was chosen by them. Once she is done with her checkup, I will question her.
I will let you know what I find out.”
“We are on our way to the U.S.” Becky says
“What is happening over there?” Kevin asks.
Becky looks outside the window to the open skies. “Steve is
dead and we know the man who killed him.”
“A life for a life.” Kevin says.
“A life for a life.” Becky replies and hangs up. She looks at
Jake once again and stares straight ahead knowing that the Chief had a little
time to enjoy his life on earth because they were coming for him.
